Building What Comes Next: A Path Forward for Homeownership in Whatcom County

The latest Cascadia Daily News article lays out numbers that are hard to ignore: with median home prices reaching $750,000, homeownership in Bellingham has slipped out of reach for far too many families. The data is staggering, but the story isn’t just about what’s broken. It’s also about what we can build.

Future Homebuyers Organization was created in direct response to this moment. For years, the traditional pathways into homeownership have failed first‑generation buyers, low‑income families, and long‑time residents who want to stay rooted in the community they love. The old rules have left too many people behind, and the consequences are visible in every neighborhood.

FHO exists to change that. Our work centers equity, transparency, and community stability. We’re developing innovative, justice‑driven approaches that reduce barriers, lower purchase prices, and open real doors for real people. By converting existing properties into permanently affordable homes and partnering with local builders and community organizations, we’re proving that a different future is possible—one where homeownership isn’t reserved for the few, but accessible to the many.

The challenges are real, but so is the opportunity. This moment calls for creativity, courage, and new models that reflect the needs of the people who live here. That’s the work we’re committed to, and we’re just getting started.

I appreciate Kerri Burnside saying what's happening when we have an optimistic outlook - Things can be better; the world can change for the better. Julia Tellman tells is like it is, too - It's complicated, and Julia reports on the some of the deeper causes of the problem. Kudos, to Kerri and to Julia!
